A place to start.

The BFI provides several routes into building a collection: individual filmmakers, British film history, archival programs, and thematic strands. Its shop lists UHD, Blu-ray, DVD, and box sets, and also sells releases from other companies. That distinction is important: a disc bought at the BFI Shop is not necessarily a disc released by the BFI.

Use the releasing-label information to identify the edition, then explore the accompanying context. A program of shorts or archive material can be as valuable to a collection as a famous feature film, especially when it reveals a part of filmmaking you rarely encounter elsewhere. The BFI's own strands, including Flipside and British Transport Films, offer useful starting points for that kind of browsing. For a first purchase, choose a subject that makes you curious and read the contents in full. Check whether shorter works, alternate versions, or commentaries are included, and whether printed material belongs to the edition being sold. If importing a UK release, pay particular attention to the region of accompanying Blu-rays and to subtitles on individual works within a larger set. A thoughtful small collection can open a substantial window into film history.
